Though I’m a registered forester in NC, my day-to-day job places me squarely in the office on most days.  Even when I’m in the “field”, nine times out of ten I’m in someone else’s office! In part to keep my outdoors skills up, in part because its a good cause, and in part because I just like working outdoors, I volunteer on a few Nature Conservancy prescribed burns (controlled fires) every year. TNC is a stand-up outfit that puts their money where their mouth is when it comes to conservation. They employ some great folks who are fun to work with, and they manage some great properties. Their willingness to actively manage their forests resonates with my education and experience. Did I mention that they let me work with fireThat resonates with my past life as a boy scout!

My wife and I bought an Acer Aspire One 751h netbook a while back. Our plan was to use it for web surfing while watching TV, email while traveling, and maybe to play some lightweight computer card games. The machine came with 2GB of RAM and a large-ish screen (for a netbook), preinstalled with Windows Vista. I had read some good things on the net regarding Windows 7 and netbooks, so I figured we’d get this one and the free upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as it came out… well, not so fast. Our netbook came with Windows Vista Home Basic, which didn’t entitle us to the free upgrade. To be honest, Vista has been pretty sluggish on this machine, and I’ve always been a bit of a geek about running Linux, so I thought that I’d try it out on my netbook.  Getting my system backed up, repartitioned, and then installing Linux wasn’t the smoothest process in the world, so I’ve recorded my story here in case it could help anyone else out.
